TIA- Advice on using April Tags BrianAshley 1 10 daysBrianAshley (46): Who has done this with success? I have five open space buildings, with only columns and walls, ranging from 11,500 - 28,000 sf. My end product needs to be in Matterport Showcase format, or I'd just use the factory Leica App. Unfortunately MP is not very forthright with divulging serious challenges of mixing MP Capture App with Leica Cameras. It may work with great geometry, but it is horrible with this environment. I thought Leica ...
What's the Better Tour Platform for Large Exterior Space? Chemistrydoc 6 17 daysChemistrydoc (424): @Panoskin I have a set up for DSLR (Canon 60D / Sigma 8mm / 3D Lantern Firmware). However, at $1 per pano (or my time) to stitch, this would be prohibitive. Thanks for your help - for smaller tours (this one could be as large as 50,000 sq ft), I will undoubtedly use the DSLR method for the superior photo quality. Keith

Tips on a Matterport Scan of a Large Space DanSmigrod 3 6 monthsangusnorriss (142): Good post - i’m about embark on an epic scan. Been reading and learning. Anyone shot aircraft so you can see wing not just fuselage? I want an ‘all-angle-fly-in’ at height of approx 100ft. I need to see the whole plane. If I scan any lower and get no wings of the plane I just get a hotdog dollshouse with a cockpit!. The MSP edition of the 747. Think I need to hire a prop tower on wheels and strap a camera to it. Advice appreciated....

Solutions for Scanning Large Box Stores DanSmigrod 5 6 monthsleonvanzweel (388): @VTLV It is not about the tool. It is about using the right tool for a specific outcome. Most people's technological knowledge is rather limited. When the question comes up I explain that a small footprint is critical to capture 360 one-shot spherical images. I can use bigger cameras with multiple shots and stitch the images together, but that will cost them a lot more. The Theta/Cupix solution works well in a low-cost environment, where...

Can I get some 'biggest scan' examples? Metroplex360 24 9 monthsMetroplex360 (8269): @Bryan We were lucky that the space was VERY open -- the MESH for many of the small rooms was fully completed from the hall as the walls were all glass. This allowed 668 Scans to cover the space. It would have been VERY difficult to have done this job w/o an iPad Pro. I do not have permission to sharer the model -- sorry :( @NicolasMorency I'm not sure if they are going to use the CAD Data. This was subcontracted and the client has their...

So to be clear the safe course is to... - Scan the whole venue - When you hit 200 scans, duplicate the space - Continue scanning in this new copy - Repeat every 50 scans or so - Upload - Cross fingers - If it doesn't complete, consider removing some scan positions or - Duplicate the model and delete 50% of it from each copy - Link via...

As you walk through it, either they deleted a great number of scans, or did just the bare minimum to create the dollhouse. At any rate, it's very large indeed. Sorry, I don't have any details about who did it, where it's located, etc. It's obviously a distribution center. Scott http://my.matterport.com/show/?m=bXbJmbZnibH

I really struggled with that during this shoot. I started with the front door open. Every time I tried to close it, the camera complained that it couldn't align. I'm also impressed with how well you avoided camera reflections in mirrors and windows.

Matterport Large Space Scanning Guide immersiveprop 2 2 yearsjfantin (1594): Thank you for this. After 18 months working with Matterport in commercial real estate I learned almost most of the tips described in the document by trial and error, but it is comforting to know that Matterport shares this kind of things with its customers. Besides, this is a fantastic document to share with a new employee and much faster than explaining in person going over each and every possible challenge in this kind of projects.
Is Matterport the right solution for hotels? DanSmigrod 5 2 yearsUserName (586): That raises the question of "what if everybody else at the trade show shows up with VR headsets?" You may become another drop in the ocean. Any person with a cheap camera can put a 360 "VR" slideshow into a headset. Here's a new VR creator service that helps you make a mobile VR tour "in minutes". I haven't tested that to verify that claim. However, only Matterport can make a magic 3D VR dollhouse. I would...

Challenges scanning This 60,000 sq ft Space DanSmigrod 3 2 yearsDanSmigrod (16117): @tomjones2787 Yes and No. If the "only" thing the client wants is Object File (.obj), then yes, shooting it as one model should work (though I would not promise the client that). The model is so big that is may take a week to process or not process at all. Then, the likely 12gig file would need to be duplicated 2-4 times; delete scans (not in the master) and resubmit as multiple jobs. It's important to manage the client's...

VR for large spaces BrettMtn 9 2 yearsRobinLycka (715): @BrettMtn With a 360 VR tour with a manual camera, you can move further. Pricing would depend on the layout of the venue. If it´s just one large hall, for trade shows etc, it´s obviously a lot easier to do than if there are 70 rooms you need to show. Either way, I would´t have enough experience with manual tours to price it either.

LARGE house scans pheller 11 3 yearsfalconshakka (67): yea looks pretty good man, you got lucky with the courtyard door, having the door closed in some of your scans almost blocked the entrance, you can only exit through a specific way Doing a large mansion is tricky, especially when you are in a crunch for time...you end up sacrificing the doll house view which ends up leaving a lot of holes in the 3D mesh but the walk through is pretty good...good job man on such a large scan

I think my 2 scans with issues may be because they were shot to close to the walls. I was trying to get the biggest angle for the lens, but this is news to me about being to close to something. I love this forum as I'm really learning from everyone. ...

Here's what Bob at Matterport came back with, which reflects the same info you gave: "200 sweeps per model is the current official maximum number of scans per model. While its not a hard stop, it does have technical merit. Basically it was determined that a 200 sweep model was the maximum sized model that could be reliably / repeatedly processed and viewed without issue. While it is possible to go higher, its beyond...
