Hi all,

A WGAN Member asked me for some tips for capturing quality scans with Matterport....

1. Overscan - take extra scans to make the dollhouse look nice; hide extra scans in Workshop
2. Use a Compass app to know where the sun is - scan where the sun is not!
3. Scan before a door jam; in the door jam and existing the door jam. Hide the door jam scan in Workshop
4. Set the Matterport Camera much lower - 4 to 5 feet - not eye level. Makes the space look bigger
5. Think about camera placement for walking (you don't zig-zag when walking)
6. Scan with closets open (for creating nice floor plans)
7. (Then) Scan with closets closed (except for walk-in closets) and hide open closet scans in Workshop
8. Scan patios and porches (see #2) - Use the Window trim in Workshop to make nice
9. Scan in bathtubs (to eliminate black holes) - Hide scan in Workshop (unless nice view from tub)
10. If you see black holes on your iPad Mini Map, scan to complete data (if extra scan, hide in Workshop

Note: Price versus Quality: Based on the price you charge, you may have to make a trade-off of "good enough" versus the best capturing quality.

What tips would you add for capturing quality scans?

Best,

Dan

Hi Dan,

Regarding point number 6 and 7. How exactly are you doing that when closets are messy? Are you saying you scan the room with closet open in it's entirety (hide all those scans) and then close the closet and re scan the whole room again?

No I think Dan is saying for closets - do a few extra scans with the closets open to only capture data. Then in workshop you hide those scans. The closets will look closed in the tour.

So the processes would be to scan the whole room with the closets closed. Then open the closet doors and scan say four or five more times and simply hide those (the four or five with the doors open)scans?

Number 7 is bad if a bedroom has a built in wardrobe with sliding mirror doors. If you keep the doors closed you will have one wall covered with a huge mirror. If you hide one door(slide it in behind the other) you at least have some space in a small bedroom where you can place a camera without it being reflected in a door mirror
