Our latest 360 Google Street View (GSV) experiment has been picked up today (20 August 2018) by the technology news site GeekWire.

A ripple in Google Street View: 360-degree camera on a boat captures Bill Gates’ mansion and more

Our goal was to map a piece of a lake waterfront where some of the most beautiful Seattle's mansions are located (including Bill Gates home).

Here is how our experiment developed. First I reached out to a friend who owns a boat. I brought along the Matterport tripod, a suction cup mount and some gaffe tape. To keep the camera as high as possible, we decided to tape the suction cup mount legs to the tripod legs.

Then we installed the camera on the glass roof top of the boat

This is what boat and camera looked from the distance

We collected 3 x 10 mins segments of 8k 5FPS footage. We made a mistake to not stop the boat during the pause / restart of new segments, so the blue line isn't perfect.

Here is Bill Gates home from the water

Special thanks to captain David Geller, our VR designer Michael Gelon, our producer Carly Kienow, @TrustedPhotoDC for the GSV tips and @dansmigrod for the invite to the GSV Summit, where all these ideas started.

@Tosolini

Thank you for sharing your latest mashup to help show us what's possible.

Amazing that you can do GSV on water. How cool is that.

Congrats on the well-deserved media coverage by GeekWire.

Best,

Dan

@dansmigrod thanks!
@rzphotoman The footage itself may not be that interesting, but the experience to capture it definitely was :-)

@Tosolini I imagine that you also have a VERY cool time-lapse 360 Video as another piece from your voyage! GSV + News Article + Time Lapse video = Amazing stuff to share with other people to get interesting, creative work!

@metroplex360 You are right :-) We filmed in 8K 30FPS on the way back and got some drone footage too. But it has been a low priority to edit it. Thanks!
