What's the Better Tour Platform for Large Exterior Space?7540

Hi All -

Up to now, I've been mainly using Matterport to GSV as the sole means to publish to GSV.

I have the opportunity to do 360 tours for series of large exterior spaces - publication to GSV is the main desired output). Unfortunately, the promised NCTech iStar Pulsar is not yet available / viable for the ordinary human at this point. So, I have my humble Ricoh Theta S, an eager client, and a number of questions.

I've been through all of the videos on Cupix and Panoskin. Does anyone have any real life experience with what I'm trying to accomplish (mainly interested in GSV publication)? If so, which platform do you recommend and why?

What kind of quality can I expect with this camera and these tour platforms?

Thanks to @DanSmigrod/WGAN, the cost of the platform is less important because of WGAN Member discounts.

Look forward to hearing your suggestions. No, stitched DSLR is NOT an option for cost reasons.

Thanks to all, in advance -

Keith

First a confession - I have no experience with what I'm about to suggest, but it may help nevertheless. I was close to a possible shoot such as you describe so here's my research.

As Matterport has a simple and ideal solution for porting a finished space to GSV, I planned to stick with MP. But exterior spaces on MP are limited to shooting before dawn, after dusk, or on very cloudy days - not the prettiest and furthermore quite rare here in So. California. So I researched renting the BLK360. I'm guessing this device prompted your reference "viable for the ordinary human."

I found RPG squarefoot solutions in Laurel MD lists the BLK360 for rent at $790/week.

Again, I haven't used any of these. I may be following in your footsteps soon, so let me know if this is helpful.

Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestion - unfortunately, the BLK360 would also probably throw the cost out of the realm of possible with this client.

I very much appreciate your exhaustive research into this, and I imagine other forum members will also appreciate it as well.

My comment regarding the NCTech iStar Pulsar relates more to the fact that this system was supposed to roll out to the general public last month; this release was delayed. The accessories that allow its full use are also not available for at least another 4-6 weeks.

In any event, I will post my results here once I do the project (if it comes to fruition)

The way I deal with large exterior spaces is using the insta360 pro and Pano2vr pro. With the gps attached to the insta360 the photographs are located correctly. They can be brought into pano2vr and then uploaded to Google. (Think thousands of photographs) The insta360 pro also has the option to take video at 5fps and then upload the video directly to Google. You need a gps attached. Best done with a stable platform, or on a gimbal.

Hi Keith,
I am not too familiar with Ricoh theta S. I know that there are other cameras that might perform a little better. There was another post today on camera reviews https://www.wegetaroundnetwork.com/topic/7538/life-in-360-with-ben-claremont-top-ten-360-cameras-in-mid-2018

A DSLR setup would be the best quality. I know you scratched it out due to cost, but even a Nikon D90 or Canon T3i with a sigma 8mm and nodal ninja will produce a good image. I am not sure where you are located, but you could also possibly rent the 8mm lens if you already have a camera and just pick up the nodal ninja and your are good to go.

If all shots are outside, the one shots might be decent enough with good lighting.(Not sure of your project scope)

You can use Panoskin to build the tours with your stitched panos. If stitching is the issue, https://www.panostitcher.com/ will stitch panos for $1 per pano.

Sorry I couldn't provide more feedback on one shot cameras, but hopefully you can get a DSLR setup to work in budget.

@Panoskin

I have a set up for DSLR (Canon 60D / Sigma 8mm / 3D Lantern Firmware). However, at $1 per pano (or my time) to stitch, this would be prohibitive.

Thanks for your help - for smaller tours (this one could be as large as 50,000 sq ft), I will undoubtedly use the DSLR method for the superior photo quality.
