We Get Around Architect and Associate Photographer Yair Yépez has pioneered our proprietary process for converting a Matterport Object File (.OBJ) to a SketchUp File (.SKP).

@YairYepez write about our new FloorMe Extreme solution in our blog post today:

We Get Around FloorMe Extreme:
Matterport Meets SketchUp File for
Easy, Fast and Affordable 3D Modeling

Why This Matters

1. Our .SKP file enables anyone to be a 3D modeler within the free SketchUp application.

2. The problem we solve: the .obj normally can not be opened in SketchUp: an affordable, easy-to-use and powerful 3D modeling tool

2. We offer this solutions to Matterport Pros whom have clients interested in the use of the Matterport Object File. Simply place the .OBJ file in a Dropbox and within three business days we'll place a friendly, easy-to-use .SKP file back in same Dropbox. Contact Us for pricing for our FloorMe Extreme solution.

As exciting as Matterport 3D and VR solutions are, the .OBJ is a hidden gem that has huge potential for space planners, architects and others interested in re-modeling interior spaces.

Essentially, we take the data and turn it into useful solutions such as our FloorMe and FloorMe Extreme solutions.

In this Dropbox, you'll find a SketchUp File (.SKP) example.

How might you use our solution to add value to your scanning service and to increase business from clients outside of houses for sale?

BTW, Yair bought a Matterport Pro 3D Camera even before 3D Showcase was an option. He loves the data that the camera captures and has used the data to help make it easier and faster for him to renovate restaurants. He has been a member of the Matterport User Group Forum for more than a year. And, I am thrilled that we successfully recruited him to join the We Get Around team.

Aside from asking us about our proprietary process, what questions or comments do you have about our new .SKP solution?

This is great! always looking for new ways to convert between 3D formats. Every piece of software seems to have its own unique format requirements and converting between these formats isn’t always easy.

Something that has come up multiple times in discussion with clients looking to use Matterport scans for architecture/design purposes is how to get the scan into CAD software. The CAD software of choice here in Australia tends to be Autodesk Revit or AutoCAD, but neither can deal with the photographic textures from the OBJ file, so all of the photographic detail gets lost when importing. After considerable trial and error we found the best way was to convert the OBJ file to point cloud and import the raw point cloud. It probably seems like a step backwards in format but the fact is that CAD software is just a lot better suited to deal with the raw point cloud than textured mesh files.

For anyone that might be interested in doing the same, we have incorporated this functionality to convert Matterport scans to point cloud in our website.

WOW! That's great. I added your "convert Matterport Scan to Point Cloud" solution to the We Get Around 3rd party Matterport Solutions Directory.

And, welcome to the Matterport User Group Forum.
