Feel free to comment in this thread about this Matterport VR Announcement ...

The following is the text of an email (2 September 2015) from the Matterport Team.

New features coming to Matterport’s VR Beta App

Dear Matterport VR Customer,

Thank you for being an early participant in Matterport’s VR program! We’re pleased to share some exciting upcoming changes to our VR app, and give you an opportunity to submit your feedback.

Later this month, we expect to release the following features to our VR app:

-- Improved main menu with model detail option. Models will include a detailed description page that lets users learn more about the model they are about to view.

-- Unlimited sideloading. Users will be able to scroll through a list of as many models as they choose to sideload.

-- Options menu. The new options menu will let you customize your app experience for enhanced comfort or to provide additional instructions for use in tradeshow or demo settings.

-- Instant-transition mode. This mode is designed for people who easily get motion-sick and provides for instant fade in / fade out transitions while navigating the model. It can be activated in the Options menu.

-- Dramatically reduced model size. Model file sizes for any new models will be reduced by approximately 70%, enabling quicker downloading.

-- Improved menu-return interface. Our improved interface will make it easier to return from a model to the main menu.

We expect to submit the new app to the Gear VR app store within a week, for release later this month. If you would like to provide feedback on the app before its release, please contact Keith in the next 2 days to receive a demo version.

We’re also hard at work on a cloud-hosted solution that will enable users to download and share models in VR via a link. Our goal is to combine the convenience of services like Box with the immersion of VR.

We welcome your feedback.

Awesome screenshots! What kind of phone do you have Dan? And so I'm guessing you have a Gear VR?

I'd like to get a VR headset and at least have one model processed to show the capabilities of the technology to prospective clients.

That said, it seems like 2016 is the year that other VR headsets are released.

What thoughts do folks have to jumping in now with the Samsung Gear or waiting on the newer headsets?

While we use a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 paired with the Samsung Gear VR Innovation Edition, if you are buying today, I would recommend the Samsung Galaxy S6 (better resolution) paired with the Samsung Gear VR (that pairs with the S6). All are on our Matterport VR Showcase Beta Gear and Accessories Shopping List.

For Matterport Pros, I recommend jumping into the deep end now: both to be able to show your clients what's coming soon and to become an expert in capturing for VR (even while you are shooting for 3D).

Please see our blog post: Matterport Pro 3D Camera Photographers Prep for Virtual Reality (VR)

We're getting some amazing meetings - and speaking opportunities - because we are able to demo the Matterport VR Showcase models that we have created (luxury real estate, luxury hotel, television set on a sound stage). Plus, we are getting business as a result of showing what's coming soon and that we capture spaces that include scans specifically for VR.

Question about the Galaxy S6 paired with the GEAR VR... you don't need to activate the cellular on the S6 device, do you? I plan to buy the S6 to use strictly with the Gear VR and not as a mobile device.

Wi-Fi only is fine. See Buy Matterport Gear and Acessorories link just below the map to make sure you buy exactly the right Galaxy S6 and Gear VV.
