MatterPak Bundle Meets 3rd Party Services6078

Hi All,

Saw this post in a related We Get Around Network Forum discussion about MatterPak Bundle.
Seemed like it deserves its own discusion about 3rd Party Services Providers that use the previously free Matterport Object File.

The AEC package from Matterport (matterpak) is a fantastic tool for 3D modeling and it will surely have cost them quite a bit to develop it. But USD 49 is a little bit too pricy. Why not USD 19 for small and USD 29 for large spaces?

And what is more important:

I think it is the completely wrong decision to move the formerly free obj to this expensive package.

Many innovative 3rd party services have built their services on this free obj. The free obj is an important part of the Matterport product. This decision would affect the quality of the Matterport product in a very negative way.

Here are examples of 3rd Party Services that use the Matterport Object File.

Know of more? Please add below ....

1. InventiveCG OBJ to SKP
2. InventiveCG Simple CAD Conversion Service
3. InventiveCG AEC CAD Conversion Service
4. InventiveCG BIMx Conversion Service
5. InventiveCG High-End Interactive Visualizations
6. FLY-IN 3D Videos
7. Veriscian - Converts .obj to .pts, .fbx, .3DS
8. We Get Around - Architect floor plans from Matterport .obj
9. We Get Around - Convert Matterport .obj to .skp, .rvt (and more)

It does not only affect the professional 3rd party providers but also the experimental work on 3rd party platforms like Sketchfab or Google Poly

Or outstanding creative experiences like @tosolini 's "MatterPortal: a journey through Matterport models and VR portals"

I think this creative work is important for the marketing of Matterport. It let's people say "Wow, this is cool, you can do this with Matterport?".

But if you have to pay 50 USD first, who will make those creative experiments? Who will contribute to the Marketing?

It would be good, if Matterport let the download of the low resolution obj for free and only charged the other (very, very cool) assets in Matterpak (high resolution obj, textures, xyz point cloud, ceiling plan, floorplan and future assets).

Yes. In a related MatterPak discussion, Danny talks about how the MatterPak pricing will dramatically impact his 3rd party services for pre-reality spaces ...
