Ricoh Announces Theta V 360-degree 4k Video Camera With Surround-Sound Audio For A Truly Immersive Experience


New, top-of-the-line Ricoh Theta model offers wide range of new and enhanced features for capturing, experiencing and sharing highly realistic audio and video


WEST CALDWELL, N.J., Aug. 31, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Ricoh Imaging Americas Corporation today announced the Ricoh Theta V camera, offering 360-degree 4K video capture and live-streaming, spatial "surround-sound" audio recording and high-speed image transfer that make it simple to capture highly realistic imagery, as well as experience and share exceptional immersive content. The Theta V is the new, top-of-the-line model in the pioneering and industry-leading Theta camera series.

When launched in 2013, the Ricoh Theta was the world's first 360-degree, single-shot camera, enabling users to express themselves in new and unique ways. 360-degree still photos and videos redefined photography by giving the viewer the ability to control what he or she sees in a scene. In addition, the resulting 360-degree images were easily shared with others, allowing them to virtually experience a scene as if they were there. Theta cameras today are being used for a broad range of consumer and business applications, ranging from documenting vacation memories to real estate listings and virtual tours, and the rapid growth of virtual reality (VR) and emergence of social media services supporting 360-degree images are expected to drive increased demand for Ricoh Theta cameras.

Retaining the award-winning, slim-line design of previous Theta models, the Theta V is lightweight, easy to use and compact enough to carry everywhere. Enhancements including a new image sensor and processor for improved image quality allow the camera to produce more realistic "as-if-you-were-there" 360-degree content. The Theta V incorporates advanced technologies originally developed for high-end PENTAX DSLRs that increase exposure accuracy and white balance, and deliver dramatically expanded dynamic range, producing higher quality images even in challenging lighting conditions. The camera's new high-speed data transfer is 2.5 times faster than previous Theta models, allowing users to quickly and wirelessly upload 14 megapixel stills and high-resolution 4K videos for immediate showing and sharing. Omni-directional audio recording functionality enables 360-degree audio that is a strong complement to the high resolution video, dramatically enhancing the realism of a scene.

The Theta V can connect to and be controlled by any Android or iOS-based smartphone or tablet using the Theta S app. Connection is either via Bluetooth low energy (BLE)—which enables an "always-on" connection between a camera and phone—or Wi-Fi, providing users with greater flexibility in how they wirelessly control the camera and upload images through the Theta S app. Built-in 19GB storage allows for up to 4,800 stills and approximately 40 minutes of 4K (H.264) video to be stored.

A new and unique feature of the Theta V is that Ricoh will be able to create new functions for the camera via software plug-ins. The first of these plug-ins was developed by Ricoh and is already integrated into the phone. It enables the Theta V to deliver the world's first remote playback capability in a commercially-marketed, fully spherical camera. Using a compatible wireless display adapter, it is possible to mirror playback of 360-degree still images and video data stored on the camera. This allows users to enjoy powerful 360-degree video a large screen monitor or via a projection display.

Two accessories are being announced with the Theta V: the 3D Microphone TA-1, designed exclusively for use with the Theta V, which is intended for use when shooting music or theatrical performances as well as for outdoors; and in October, the Underwater Case TW-1, which allows use of the Theta V (as well as the Theta S and SC) at underwater depths up to nearly 100 feet (30 meters).

The Ricoh Theta V will be officially unveiled at IFA 2017, the world's largest consumer electronics show, held in Berlin, Germany, September 1-6, 2017.

1. High-resolution 360-degree spherical still images and video
Both the image quality of still images and video has been significantly improved, and power consumption has been reduced using a new image sensor that supports high-speed image data readout. Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ is the main processor. Furthermore, Ricoh has completely enhanced the exposure accuracy and white balance algorithm by combining image processing technology cultivated through the development of high performance PENTAX digital SLR cameras. Ricoh has also performed tuning to obtain accurate and natural portrayal of high-definition 360-degree spherical images with an approximately 14.0 effective megapixel output for still images even when using auto shoot.

Users can directly post 360-degree spherical images shot using the camera to Facebook, YouTube and other social and messaging services, upload them to the dedicated website and share them on social networks such as Twitter and Tumblr. Unique cropped images can also be shared using Instagram. It is also possible to submit captured spherical videos and images to Google Maps™.

2. 4K compatible high resolution 360-degree video
The camera can shoot high-definition, smooth 360-degree video at 30 frames per second at a resolution of 3840 x 1920 pixels, which is equivalent to 4K. Users can enjoy greater realism by creating immersive VR video content and watching video on a large screen. In addition to supporting the H.264 file format for video recording, the more recent video compression standard of H.265 is also supported in anticipation of future applications based on the API release.

3. 360-degree spatial audio recording that reproduces overwhelming realism
The camera has a 4-channel microphone that supports 360-degree spatial audio recording built into its body. Omnidirectional audio is recorded not just in the horizontal direction but also in the vertical direction, making it possible to reproduce sound and video as it was in the environment where the video was shot by linking 360-degree video and audio together. Furthermore, using the dedicated accessory "3D Microphone TA-1" (optional) scheduled for launch with the camera will allow users to pick up natural sound with a large volume of information at low to high frequency. The 3D Microphone TA-1 is equipped with a microphone unit developed by Audio-Technica Corporation.

4. High-speed data transfer
The communication speed is now approximately 2.5 times faster than with previous Theta models, based on Ricoh testing. This enhancement was achieved by improving the wireless communication module and increasing the data processing speed. It enables the large volume of image data that accompanies higher-resolution images to be efficiently transferred and browsed.

5. World's-first Remote-Playback capability in a commercially-marketed, fully spherical camera
This feature allows users to wirelessly playback 360-degree images and videos on a large-screen display. Using a compatible wireless display adapter, it is possible to mirror playback of 360-degree still images and video data stored on the camera. This allows users to enjoy powerful 360-degree video on large displays.

6. Bluetooth and wireless LAN dual communication
The camera can always be connected to a smartphone using Bluetooth low energy. Images can be shot from a smartphone while connected only using Bluetooth, and the power of the camera can be turned on from the basic application when it enters sleep mode.This function provides improvements in usability and power consumption. With wireless LAN connection, all functions such as live-view display on a smartphone and image transfer can be used. User can select either Bluetooth or wireless LAN connection as needed depending on the shooting scene.

7. Functions can be added using plug-ins
The Theta V is based on the Android operating system, which allows its functionality to be easily extended via smartphone applications. Various plug-ins are currently under development.

8. Scheduled future updates using function expansions
The camera's high extensibility will enable regular performance enhancements via firmware updates. Updated functionality currently in development and scheduled for release in 2017 include:

A function that significantly speeds up the transfer speed by performing a composite process for 360-degree video shot in a camera fixed in position within the camera first and not during the time of transfer
A client mode that allows the camera to operate as a client and simultaneously connect to the Internet over a wireless LAN router environment
9. Support for 4K 360-degree live streaming output
Real-time output of high resolution, 360-degree spherical video equivalent to 4K is supported. This makes it possible to share a scene over the Internet—such as a concert, meeting or other event—enabling the viewer to feel as if he/she was actually at the shooting location. Live streaming requires a computer with high-performance image processing and a high-speed communication environment to transmit.

3D Microphone TA-1

A Ricoh Theta V-dedicated 3D microphone. Equipped with a microphone unit developed by Audio-Technica Corporation, a company recognized for its high technological strength and reliability. The microphone can pick up deep sounds at middle to low frequency due to the directional microphone with a large aperture at approximately 10 mm, compared to built-in microphones. This makes well suited to shooting musical performances. Also, attaching the included wind screen to the microphone allows video to be shot with reduced wind noise when outdoors.

Underwater Case TW-1 – Available October 2017

This underwater housing is waterproof up to a depth of 30 meters (equivalent to JIS Class 8 waterproof standard) to achieve 360-degree underwater shooting. A mechanism on the case enables a user to trigger the camera through the case. It is compatible with the Ricoh Theta S and SC models as well as the Ricoh Theta V. The case's surface has a scratch-resistant, anti-reflective coating, and the case is equipped with a tripod socket to allow its use with monopods and other camera accessories.

Yes. Very exciting. Seems like every week we add another 360º Camera to the We Get Around List of 360º Cameras in the under $500 category.

I recommend buying only Google Street View certified 360º cameras.

I am curious to know if this camera has a better depth of field than its predecessor.

I also predict that this will be a perfect device for third party experiments with ARKit.

It's that fuzzy feeling depth of field that killed my interest in the Theta S. I ordered it, used it twice and it's been sitting in the bag.
