Hand ScannersObjectsScanningVirtual Staging

Scanning objects with a hand scanner?16070

Tutanchamun private msg quote post Address this user
Hey pros, I am trying to find out a way to scan objects in 3D, for example furniture, which later on can be used in virtual staging. Do anybody have experience with hand scanners and their prices, which are required to have a good quality result?

And which is actually the best way for virtual staging with a 3D editor?

There is capture3D and the only one I know for Matterport, where you can virtually staging your spaces with a beta 3D editor.

3Dvista is working without an editor. And the rest is staging your photos manually for high costs, aren’t they?

When you say "objects" such as furniture in 3D, that implies photogrammetry or, in other words, stitching overlapping photos taken from many angles around the object together to form a point cloud that can be edited and processed into a photo-realistic 3D model of the object. In many cases, these 3D models are then fed to a 3D printer to output a physical replica of the object.
The 3D modelling world is replete with both open source (such as Blender, Sketchup), subscription (such as Pix4D, Autodesk's Maya) and licensed software ("editors" such as Agisoft Metashape. The most common 3D model hosting platform is Sketchfab.com on which people can share their models privately or publicly and even sell them commercially.
If you are simply looking for 3D models of furniture, perhaps you can contact virtual staging services such as BoxBrownie or VS24 to look through their catalogs and perhaps they'll sell you the model(s) you are interested in. I don't know if they would, but it might be worth a try to save a lot of effort and expense.

@tut last things first. you can virtually stage Matterport spaces with MPEmbed, which is probably the most affordable option, with treedis or with MPSkin.

For serious scanning have a look at the EinScan.

But I would probably recommend to start with an iPhone App. Polycam or Everypoint are very good to start with.

I cannot say about handheld scanners.

Regarding staging, Captur3D allows to stage Matterport and apart from officially offered staging through VRPM virtual staging in Captur3D is shown both in 360s and in a 3D dollhouse.
I tried it when they started offering it and it was quite good.
It was free back then but I am not sure about cost now. It is DIY and Captur3D provides a library with objects both furniture and decor. And you can stage with your own models importing yours into Captur3D.

There were some bugs and texture on objects was not looking realistic but it was a few months ago. I am sure it looks much more better now.

The tour below has been done with Capture3D. If you walk forward in the tour until you see the balcony door on the left the plant on the table is virtual and the four squares on the wall in front are too. They are actually supposed to be 4 pictures, not sure why they have gone white.

First, one very good example with Capture3D, where you also can see some of their possibilities: https://captur3d.io/view/jellis-craig/297-napier-st-fitzroy-3065-5f13b1

When you have a look to the television, then you have to switch the button for staging inside the menu on the left screen border. I think, that Capture3D is the best for doing it yourself, because with the Creator Studio you can use the dollhouse for staging.

Here is one good quality example from Listing3D, one another virtual staging service: https://partnership.3dvirtualstaging.club

As Wingman said, you can just see the differences in the dollhouse. In the 360s you can’t switch it.

@EaglePrecision: Thanks for your overview. I have the idea to sell Italian designers stuff virtually and selling their 3D models to staging service companies. As well I could take a higher amount of money from clients because of its exclusivity. On my last holidays there I have already raised interests and it was also a happenstance to be there at the same time to the world wide famous Milano Design Week :-)

@MeshImages: I have the newest iPad Pro with M1 Chip and Lidar and already played a bit with Polycam. But the result was sucking. I watched youtube about a hand scanner around 500 Euros, which result was better, but not good enough. Also you have to scan in darkness with special lights. Then the problems are going on with shiny surfaces, mirrors, glasses and so on… The next step would be a hand scanner around 5000 Euros, which I googled from another providers like EinScan, which I didn‘t know and as well which is looking like a German company, too. I guess their hand scanner are starting at the same range. But I have never seen their results…

@EaglePrecision: Would the results be the same between a 5000 Euro hand scanner in compare to the photogrammetry way? Are there any services or do you have to do it yourself? How precise is the photogrammetry way and how many time is needed in compare to a 5000 Euro hand scanner, which should have a lot of more quicker work flow, haven‘t it? What would be the quickest and cheapest mix of hard and software to achieve a 4k 3D model?

@Wingman: Yes, you are true. They had improved it already and it is a part of Capture3D now, I guess.

@MeshImages: May I am looking for an cooperation with you, what do you think? I have seen your website and it is looking that you have a good and fair concept, like I want to do it.

Have a look at this thread

There are a couple of software mentioned that will let you try photogrammetry. Since it is for furniture you may get away with a free version of Zephyr 3D that allows you to process up to 50 photos.

Just make sure you overlap every photo, use a tripod and a video or 360 ball head to change angles. It can be done without a tripod but usually you get less photos accepted for processing that way.

@Tutanchamun I am with @Wingman

Photogrammetry beats 3D hand scanning.

There is so much R&D & money moving into tools and applications for photogrammetry with mobile phones and professional cameras, that I would not take the risk of an investment into a 3D handscanner.

@Wingman and @MeshImages: This is amazing, what is possible with photogrammetry. Really last time when I was up to date, it was 2017. I had already the idea to start a own business, but the authorities in my hometown didn’t supported me, because they still don’t know what is innovation. Also nctech canceled a project with a LiDAR scanner. I guess, because of its long time to scan in relation with movements was the main problem. I didn’t know at these days that there will come out this alternative. Really I am surprised of the power of photogrammetry and that also now new camera systems are setting on photogrammetry instead of LiDAR or another lasers and lights. Now I have understand why and have the feeling now that one of my questions was pretty stupid

https://weiss-ag.com/civetta360camera/ This is the best example for it. But what are the costs?

https://www.nctechimaging.com/capture/istar-fusion/ Now nctech is doing the same

https://iris360.co/ and https://www.4dkankan.com/#/coreProducts/ and https://www.4dkankan.com/#/kankanMinion/ Another good examples

https://arvr.google.com/earth/ Very good example

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ar4LizWW9rQ Look this crazy guy

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UuKgEFuMzY This is a German engineer who is trying a new LiDAR scanner on a drone which is beating the photogrammetry

So there is still r&d in LiDAR

I made a post about it a few weeks ago. This is crazy expensive, like 90 000 euros.

Isnt it just DSLR+Fisheye lens+minipc in a box??? and samples looks a bit soft.

@bethereeu No, Weiss-AG is similar to Matterport and comes with a professional 3D platform software behind it.

I would guess it's selfhosted with focus on corporate and industrial clients.

Sorry for my late answer.

@Wingman: I just reposted it and got the idea from your post. But the price is crazy 😜

About photogrammetry I like to add the new feature from apple, which is coming in right timing for me: https://developer.apple.com/augmented-reality/object-capture 😇

@DanSmigrod and @all: Last but not least I like to add a new platform from Germany, which is looking like a small revolution in virtual tours: https://vr-easy.com/platform/home 😎

Now it is really hard for me to decide to set on which platform and hardware setup to start my own business. Would be the Giraffe360 the best solution for me in this time?

Keep in mind that I only have seen the price mentioned once on some laser scanning forum. It is not confirmed and can be more or significantly less.

As for photogrammetry on Ipad/Iphone there are a few apps already. Sorry I do remember their names but if you search for photogrammetry you should be able to find them all. Also try an IOS device with a LiDAR such as recent Ipad Pros or Iphone Pros. If you need it strictly for objects a size of furniture you may be able to do it with apps designed to use built in LiDAR.

Giraffe360 is more like Matterport and it is more suitable for spaces, not objects.

Por que você não utiliza uma ferramenta para ciração de um streaming 360 ao invés de scam 360 ?

Yes, Wingman, I tried it already, but the result was sucking. And like it said before, that at the moment the photogrammetry is R&D, so that in the near future the apps are going to be better with good results. Like the samples on the object capture page from apple are very good quality results… But I think, that the Lidar wouldn’t be needed anymore, when the photogrammetry is improved and developed further on, otherwise for example the Weiss AG wouldn’t set on a high expensive camera system without a Lidar, because it isn’t needed anymore, or is it?
