Matterport and PTC Enable Customers to Create Augmented Reality Experiences for Large Spaces
The integration between the Matterport and PTC Vuforia platforms fuels innovative applications from industrial to retail.

SUNNYVALE, Calif., July 13, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- Matterport, Inc., the leading spatial data company driving the digital transformation of the built world, which has entered into a definitive agreement for a business combination with Gores Holdings VI (NASDAQ: GHVI, GHVIU, and GHVIW), today announced its platform integration with the PTC (NASDAQ: PTC) Vuforia Engine™ and Vuforia Studioaugmented reality (AR) software offerings available within the Vuforia® Enterprise Augmented Reality Suite.

Customers can now enrich digital twins captured with the Matterport platform with interactive AR experiences called Area Targets. This new functionality from PTC, combined with Matterport's dimensionally-accurate spatial data, enables customers to drop into an exact location of an immersive 3D environment and access experiences such as wayfinding, virtual training, real-time information retrieval, and more.

Offices, stores, factory floors, apartments, and museums are ideal spaces for Area Targets. Companies in a wide range of industries can realize a wide range of benefits using AR visualizations within 3D digital twins, from the creation of engaging customer experiences to the increase of operational efficiencies and workforce productivity.

"PTC is excited to offer a joint solution with Matterport that gives customers a highly visual and interactive way to deliver digital content onto the environments captured by the Matterport platform," said Michael Campbell, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Augmented Reality Products, PTC. "Applications using Area Targets can leverage real-time navigation and viewing of in-context IoT data available on-demand on the factory floor. This enables customers to increase workforce efficiency and improve training times."

Hundreds of thousands of subscribers around the world have brought more than five million spaces online to date with the Matterport platform to access, manage and utilize them more effectively. The company has extended its market reach from real estate to include architecture, engineering and construction; retail; insurance and restoration; travel and hospitality; and facilities management.

"Partnering with PTC has resulted in a game-changing offering that will fuel innovation across many industries," said Japjit Tulsi, Chief Technology Officer of Matterport. "It's exciting to see how developers are using Matterport, the Vuforia Engine, and Area Targets to create highly engaging 3D experiences that generate meaningful ROI for customers."

This could be a great feature! Unfortunately most potential business cases (maintenance, training, art, etc.) are not compatible with Matterports Terms of Service.

Hi Dan, yes I will try to explain.

PTCs Vuforia Engine enables the development of app based augmented reality experiences with markerless tracking. Markerless means that no QR code or image is necessary to trigger and place the AR projection. Instead the AR projection is enabled with the obj from the Matterport scan. You can place AR projections with Mattertags. A great combination!

App based AR is ideal for museums and factory floors (maintenance, training, onboarding, monitoring). In theory, because both industries (in Germany and maybe the EU) will probably not allow Matterport scans as
-Matterport data is transferred to the US (which is forbidden for most public listed companies in my country)
-Matterport data can only be accessed in the cloud
- the photographer has no control over the data (I can not delete myself, I have to ask Matterport to delete) and finally
- Matterport claims ownership for some of the scanned (created) 3D data (obj) in the TOS.

I think the Matterport system is great for real estate, hospitality and shops, but not for professional industry services.

I just came across this one (again). ViewAR is an AR platform from Austria and has a nice Matterport integration (plus others like NavVis).

I think you don't need the Matterport hosting here, only the Matterpak data.

Have a look at this video here. It shows use cases and the backend interface of the app builder.

It could be interesting to compare the different AR solutions with Matterport regarding stability, workflow, cost etc.
