Capture at Night in the C-O-L-D62

Hi All,

I have a Matterport outdoor shoot this Sunday night in Atlanta. It's going to be C-O-L-D (at least by Atlanta standards).

The temperature in Atlanta Sunday night will be 48-degrees F (9C). The maximum low operating temperature for the Matterport Pro 3D Camera is 50-degrees F (10 C).

hmmmmmmm.

Matterport let me know that "the consensus is the farther outside that specification you go, the more likely alignment errors will occur. It may be possible to minimize this effect to some degree by allowing the camera to warm up for at least 5 minutes prior to the start of scanning."

Outdoors. Night. Cold. Painting in light. Key lights. Just another day in pushin' the limits of the Matterport tech.

I'll keep you posted on how it goes.

Wearin' my earmuffs,

Dan

I just did 2 scans or about 3-5 min at -20 with no issues to scan just a couple scans outside the back door.

Good luck!

We will reschedule due to storm clouds and rain. While heavy storm clouds will help with the success of outdoor shoots, we want the sky to be blue or blue plus puffy clouds.

Great news on the temperature 'front' ...

Despite the Matterport camera being rated for 50ºF/10ºC temperature for success ...

...I successfully captured 108 scans in the C-O-L-D in Atlanta on Friday:

12 scans in 25ºF on an outdoor deck (back of house)
76 scans in 42º F in-doors (un-heated house for sale)
20 scans in 43ºF on an outdoor deck (front of house)

Am I correct to assume that the circles on the floor represent each scan? If so this will help me plan out my own scans.

@markmc90 Yes.

On the cold weather front, I successfully scanned about a dozen at 25-degree (F) on a deck this week.

After each scan, I brought the camera inside to warm-up while the scan processed.

I did a whole back yard in Minnesota with temps that where pretty cold, i.e. snow on the ground and indirect sunlight. I didn't have any issues with the camera or alignment.

@BredeErickson

it!

That's 'cool!'

Do you recall the exact temperature and if you experienced unusual scanning failure?

Best,

Dan

@DanSmigrod

Temps were in the 20's and falling as I recall, it was pretty late in the day when i got to the back yard. I didn't experience any real problems with alignment but i worked the perimeter against the fence so that i had some structure for the Matterport to latch on to. I was outside for probably 30 minutes.
