I just did 5,400 sf property in 1 hour and 11 minutes. I think I could have shaved off another two minutes but I'll never know.

Also, I received the model back from Matterport in less than two hours ready to be edited.

Before I calculated *about* 2000sf per 50 minutes. This time has been cut in half.

If this is the new 'normal' then I can fit in more scans per day.

Is this a fluke or have I just noticed it and it's been this fast for a while?

How many scans?
I can get 1/minute if I'm awake and organized.

Hi Steven,

It is an astonishing time! I would say Formula One time indeed.

I havenĀ“t noticed any particular increase in Matterport's speed lately. Usually my estimation has been 1,200/1,400 sf in 60 minutes in furnished homes and less if empty.

Do you think that this new scanning speed is related to a change in Matterport's side or is it that you walk/run between takes?

It is usually 50seconds/1 minute per scan and this is the main constraint for timing purposes.

@ArchimedStudio No, this was four levels.

3D Walkthrough

I started at 11:05am (pressed start) and finished the last scan at 12:16. I did a total of 77 scans.

I paid super attention to timing and placement as I had a super short window to fulfill a drone job that had been requested that morning.

However, I'm having an issue with the 2nd floor going into the shared bath between the two bedrooms. I tried to adjust a marked mirror a hair closer but not sure if that will do it.

In any event, it appears the scans are taking about the same time but the processing time is MUCH faster. I can hardly get it ready and positioned for the next shot before it's ready to go.

Did you do anything different and was your mind set going in to do it fast? Anything new with the app that helped speed it up?

@HarlanHambright mathematically I was able to get each scan at 55 seconds.

I think I could get it to 53 seconds or less if there weren't so many floors. It takes time to go between floors.

@ron0987 I don't know. This is why I posted. I wanted to know if this is 'normal' or a fluke. I certainly paid attention to speed this time because I receive a 'rush' drone job and wanted to sneak it in before the end of the day.

I didn't expect to shave more than half my normal time off but certainly happy.

Overall, I just want to know if this is the new normal so I can research my times and ordering schedule.

It's pretty impressive that you did all of this in just over 1H! I do understand why we spend much more time though. We pay very close attention to the quality of the dollhouse (no holes anywhere) and so that the viewer can walk anywhere.

But who's smarter between us? Very good question! Speed and execution might trump quality! The experience you give might not be "perfect", but it's still very good (and probably good enough for the majority!).

Good stuff!

Your absolutely correct. There are two 'styles' of shooting. I've found out through pure experience that the consumer is looking for efficiency.

I've also learned on mobile devices there are sometimes issues with connection speeds and the customer gets FRUSTRATED and complains it 'doesn't work or go where I want it to'.

I've had the same issue using my phone and going through models.

To eliminate this I developed my 'system' and that is on the efficiency and user experience side.

For example, look at the stairway between the 3rd and 4th floor. It is a nice amount of stairs and there is no 'extra scans' in the stair case.

Who needs 5 scans going up the stairs? It saves me time and the user doesn't waste time 'climbing' the stairs.

To me, it's smarter, faster and more money per hour. Every single user will see the entire house from all of the 'natural' places they would go.

Absolutely good enough for the majority because the majority has no idea how to distinguish this 'type' of quality.

We've had trouble going up the stairs too quickly in the past (while scanning I mean), and had to go back, delete scans, etc... so to "save time" we rarely ever go above skipping 3 steps at a time. Your example shows that you can go way beyond this point!

Did you hide a point in the stairs leading to the upper floor (play room/attic)? This seems like a crazy long stretch and I wonder how you didn't get a misalignment error message.

Once again, great and inspiring job!

@StevenHattan, nice one, and I agree with your reasoning, people wants quicker loading models than a picture perfect dollhouse.

I have had more complaints about the time it takes a model to load on a mobile than compliments on a complete dollhouse.

I also noticed the processing is producing better models without the need for lots of trim lines

Processing definitely seems faster on the Matterport server, did one today and uploaded before leaving premises and on my way home I got the notice to say its ready for view. Will time the next one so that its more scientific :-)

After 200 spaces, I am definitely moving towards efficiency. It really depends on the client. You can always remove scans to optimize and upload, you can't easily add scans after the fact.

My primary concern with scanning is clear navigation too. Grid scanning with 90 degree turns when possible is always best for user experience.

@ArchimedStudio I always disable half of my stair scans. It was pointed out to me by another MSP that stairs are cumbersome to navigate otherwise.

I did 41,000 sq ft on 5 hours a few day ago. Could have been slightly faster as some people were getting in the way.

You know with real vision I also did 250,000 sq ft I side and out in 3 hours. No comparison for speed between the two

Hi Jamie,

How did you do to make 41,000 sq ft in 5 hours with Matterport!

This is 8,200 sq ft per hour and in an hour you cannot take more than 60/70 shots, so it is one shot per 117.14 sq ft.

Am I right with the math here?

So you managed to work in a grid pattern where each shot was separated by approximately 11 feet. Right in the edge of the alignment reach for the camera

Can you share with us more details? This is unbelievable and deserves recognition!

It's not the best model unfortunately. It's an aged care home. We had to escorts 30 elderly people out of the larger room and only had minutes to shoot it, hence the missing sections. I may return and try to grab additional shots to fill in the holes. It will be a stretch to get it to work though.
