A few thoughts to bear in mind:

Realsense is out now on few laptops and on the new dell venue 8x series. The tablet features one of the 3 cameras released by intel: the snapshot version, here there is a good article on toms's hardware.

For developers there is one special version of this camera called Camera (Rear R200) specifically designed for Augmented Reality and environment scanning.

I don't want to be the party pooper here as I have not purchased a camera yet (actually going to buy one if nothing else disrupting comes in reasonably quickly) but, as I assume many of you have experienced, relationship with matterport has been quite bumpy for many of you.

I do understand the heat on their neck (matterport) being somewhat in competition on the hardware side with giants like intel, google enough to scare off much larger companies.

On the software side it looks like they are working hard to promote their magic stitching but let's consider that software is quite "easy" to be replicated, forked, outsourced, open sourced and the list goes on.

I think here in this forum we all share an ultimate goal to provide this amazing service to real estate and not only boats, yachts, shops, virtual and interactive shopping experiences, sky is the limit.

It would be interesting to know what kind of file is outputted by the camera (realsense) itself, is it an obj file? If so the camera (matterport) could be used with or without the subscription in the near future.

Once again this is not to disrespect matterport's very hard work and fine product but the stricts terms of services, the bumpy relationship with costumer service, the very few updates on their site's blog and many other small and bigger details have refrained me from jumping on a straight purchase.

Personally on a much smaller scale I've had a terrible experience with a software I did not own for my own rental website in Florence. Bad things can happen and not having access to your work, the work you do on behalf of clients it's a big deal.

Many developers are jumping on the AR bandwagon so it might be interesting to reach out to them and see if some good developer might be interested in writing a software that does what we all need here with maybe a little less strict terms.

I am going to email some of those devs to learn more about their progresses. Developing a software like the matterport is in the order of the 100k's but we are how many?

Dan as owner of the forum, if my post is too harsh or rioting I will update it or feel free to add your comments.

Very valid points. These days your competition is just a crowdfunding away. Razer VR is doing essentially a Oculus Rift open source. I would like to see somebody do that for something like matterport. Completion is good for consumers and makes companies better no? At least it would put pressure on Matterport to be more responsive to their customers. Its a unique situation. Lecia and Faro laser scanners output lots of formats that work with a wide variety of software to do what you wish with it. With matterport it is a closed system. You are locked into the platform for the most part. Either with the content that they provide to us or contractually with the terms. I think that they don't think they need to be responsive because once you buy a camera you are committed to the platform and there is no real alternative or competing platform. The matterport logo being a prime example. Everyone has screamed about that. I also think the terms are what they are because matterport wants to retain the right to sell the data to google for interior maps etc. In addition they want to be able to place furniture in the models and link to make a sale for which I am sure there would be revenue sharing with the furniture maker or seller. Who would share in that revenue though? Again not trying to be negative or cause problems but these are critical and important issues. Often it seems like we are working for the benefit of matterport with little reciprocity or upside on our end. A lot of people at matterport have been great and they are doing great things. I want to be a big supporter of Matterport but not at the expense of my own business. I feel that open discussions like this are important and valuable for all involved.

I have not been on the forum for a while and I always enjoy reading different points of view and also enjoy giving input on certain topics. I see lots of input on other systems and equipment, I think the overall outcome for us is what are we looking for. Over all I see Matterport as having some issues I disagree with and wish were different but overall I am happy. This is the way I look at it does the price for the final product make it worth it. I am familiar with Leica and Faro scanners, but you’re talking about $40-100 thousand dollars investment for the equipment, 2-5 thousand in yearly maintenance for the equipment. 1-2 thousand for the software with a yearly maintenance fee of the same. The learning curve is definitely not as easy as Matterport. There is also a request from end users of those products to improve them by using DSLR to improve the output photos or tweak the output thru software. The exported project for Faro is somewhat proprietary and has to be processed thru their software to get a usable output product or use an Autodesk software that has a yearly fee of 5 thousand to get a usable product. I see some of the competitor equipment with a final product not nearly as good Matterport or as easy to use for the overall price. Project Tango has a quick output but nowhere near the quality for what I am looking for. Now there is always something newer and things get better, I do hope Matterport changes some things but overall I found them to be responsive for several issues I have had. The one thing I see as a big issue is being able to delete existing projects that are not needed. I do think we should be assessing the other equipment to see what they are doing and can we get Matterport to improve. I like this forum and again Dan thanks for your input and keeping this going.

Ron
