Here is my first model. Hopefully this will not be my best work but it was a blast to shoot. I am glad it was a rainy day, seems to help with large windows.

I shot this backstage tour of "A Christmas Carol" at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta Thursday (4 December 2014). (Our blog post)

It's a nice use-case: timely event promotion to existing and potential ticket buyers.

Not for the faint of heart: I did 300+ scans; duplicated the project on my iPad and then deleted scans to get to under 200. (200 is the maximum number of Scans Matterport will support, if there is a problem processing)

The risk is that the model might have fallen apart because some of the scans might have been necessary for linking the others. Think of the model as a "House of Cards" – careful about removing a 'weight-bearing' Scan.

I tend to capture and prune the scans I feel are not necessary for storytelling, but are needed to help initially connect the Scans. In this example, I wanted to deliver one backstage tour model: not two.

For context, Matterport writes: "The purpose of the live alignment [on the iPad Air] is to check to make sure the Scans can align before the server [Cloud] attempts to create a model from them. So, yes, deleting scans from the edges will maintain the alignment of the ones remaining."

While it took about 16 hours to process, it worked as one model. My fall-back (which I also did) was to duplicate the original model twice: Model 1: front of the house and backstage except the "backyard"; Model 2: just the "backyard".

I managed our clients expectations upfront that I might need to deliver the backstage tour as two models. If you're counting, there were four models: 1) 300+ scans; 2) removed 100+ scans; 3) front of the house and the backstage except the "backyard"; 4) the "backyard". I only delivered #2 to our client (he is thrilled).

Hi all,
I just got this model back from matterport as I had trouble with the capture app, so they stitch it together for me. It has roughly 300 capture points, with some outside areas of the home. Its a pretty big model, at 15,000sqft and it seems to run slower than i would like. If you guys have any input about it feel free to let me know.
Thanks!
-Jake

Wow, large...I know Dan posted previously about doing 300 and deactivating a 100, but it's my understanding that they will only guarantee models with 200 or less. Whilst deactivating scans removes them from the showcase, the 3D model data for 300 remains...that's a lot for web GL to handle.

@JakeRees Wow! Now that's a house! I'll ask my wife if she wants to downsize to this one.

Outdoors looks great. Shows off the view nicely.

Any challenges with the spiral stair cases?

Best wishes in 2015.

Dan

@DanSmigrod Its funny, the spiral staircase was actually one of the easier parts. I have to say in general, the bigger the house the easier it is to capture, simply because you don't have tight corners or small walkways to capture. Im glad the outside capture turned out well, normally it is way too sunny where I am in southern California, luckily it was a "rainy" day.

@Tim I wanted to delete more points but I didn't want to lose anything that may have been needed so it could be stitched together without there being a problem. But you are very right, it is a lot for web gl to handle.

@JakeRees Our Matterport 3D Showcase for Atlanta Intown Expert Realty includes two outside patios. Though there are no glass windows, we still use the windows tool to "clean up" the view and minimize artifacts.

Our media release announcing all Intown Realty Expert $500,000+ listings to include Matterport 3D Showcase tours created by We Get Around.
