	A reader of the We Get Around Matterport blogs writes ... --- Question on accuracy. Matterport says it's accurate to 1-2% in residential applications. That would, for instance, be up to 1 foot off per every 50 feet of dimension, which would certainly not work for as-built purposes. Can you clarify on this? --- Architect Presentation to Client My wife and I are in the midst of a house remolding project. Our architect is using the SketchUp file (.skp) that we created from the Matterport Object file (.obj) to create a 3D model for us to 'walk through' to help us visualize the remodeling (including 'seeing' sight lines and heights. The data captured by the Matterport Camera is good enough for this phase of the project. General Contractor Estimating Cost Once we approve the remolding design, the architect will use the model within Autodesk Revit to output construction plans for our General Contractor. These measurements will be good enough for the general contractor to prepare an estimate for us. Measure Twice; Cut Once Once we approved the project, all trades will do their own on-site measuring (regardless of the architect's construction plans. So, it doesn't matter if we began with precise laser scanning or Matterport infrared scanning. Industry custom is to measure yourself before cutting. The Accuracy of Matterport scanning is good enough for: 1. Architect Presentation to Client 2. General Contractor Estimating Cost It is not good enough when trades people are ready to cut and install. And, that's true for Matterport scans, laser scans or Building Information Management (BIM) renderings. Anyone else using the data captured by the Matterport Camera for renovations/construction?

I would add to your list that Matterport can be a great tool for as-built documentation of building services, particularly for commercial projects.

There many parts of a build that DO need incredibly fine accuracy (e.g. verifying slab/column thickness, sizing for any offsite fabrication), however much of the services DON'T require such accuracy. Services such as ductwork, heating/cooling, water/drainage, fire services, cable trays and just about anything else you can stuff into wall/ceilings/ducts. For a project such as a hospital, these services make up a significant proportion of the build.

For a general contractor, the blanket line will tend to be that Matterport isn't accurate enough for as-builts (and it probably isn't when it comes to documenting the structural aspects of the build that they typically concern themselves with) - but it can offer real value for the as-builts of building services.

	One other comment regarding the 1-2% accuracy, this cumulative error can build up over large scans. One way to minimize this error over larger sites is to use survey points that you either record yourself or source from construction drawings. These can be used to realign your scans to the local area you are working on in CAD. Of course this can become a bit tedious. Going a step further - one solution which we helped to implement for a client was to convert the Matterport scan to point cloud and "fitting" it to some columns that had been accurately surveyed. These columns were about 10m (~33ft apart) which meant even over a large site, the scan was in the order of +-100mm (+-4inches). This was sufficiently accurate for their purposes (which was as-builts for building services).
